Whether your own pup has one on the way or you’re simply curious, learn five fascinating facts about dog pregnancy! 

Fact #1: Dog Pregnancy Lasts 2 Months

Several variables determine how long a dog is pregnant, including their breed, age, and even size! In fact, smaller breeds tend to have slightly shorter pregnancies than larger breeds. The average dog pregnancy across all breeds is about 65 days, according to a study conducted by Theriogenology on parturition prediction. While the pregnancy itself is a short time frame, the full canine heat cycle lasts about six months. This means furry friends are usually able to have just one or two pregnancies a year.  

Fact #2: Dogs Can Birth Up to a Dozen Pups in One Pregnancy

How long dogs are pregnant is one unique aspect of canine reproduction, but the number of pups they carry is another captivating detail! It’s well known that pooches produce an entire litter, but that number can range anywhere from 1–12 pups in one pregnancy. In fact, the Guinness World Record for the largest litter is an incredible 24 puppies! 

Bonus fact: mothers will start nursing their birthed puppies before the rest of the litter is even born. Moms can really do it all!

Fact #3: Dogs Can Experience Morning Sickness

Have you ever wondered if your furry friend is expecting? Well, like humans, some dogs experience morning sickness early in their pregnancy! Some pups will get sick every morning or after they have their breakfast.

Other signs of dog pregnancy include increased appetite, belly growth, irritability, lethargy, and incontinence. If your dog is experiencing these symptoms, consider reaching out to your veterinarian for an evaluation. 

Fact #4: Dogs Experience a "Nesting Phase"  

Nesting during pregnancy is the instinct to prepare a safe location for the newborn puppies. It is also one of the signs that labor is coming! Common nesting behaviors include shredding blankets, rearranging furniture, or even seeking a quiet, safe place to give birth. Many pet parents create a nesting (or whelping) box for their furry friend to feel safe and comfortable during labor.

How to make a nesting box:

You’ll first want to choose a calm location for the box. Use wood or any preferred material to build a sturdy floor, then add walls around the sides. The walls need to be tall enough for the puppies to stay in, but low enough for Mom to walk out. Lastly, add blankets, pillows, or bedding to make it extra cozy! For added floor protection, place a Wee-Wee® Pad or washable pee pad across the bottom of the box. 

Fact #5: Dog Labor Takes Less Than a Day

Labor can be a long and intense process for humans, but it tends to go much quicker for dogs. Labor should last less than 24 hours—typically ranging from 2–13 hours from start to finish. According to PDSA, when a dog’s labor goes over 24 hours, their risk for health problems increases.

Veterinarians from Cornell University note three stages of dog labor: dilation, expulsion, and delivery of the placenta. After labor, dogs often experience a discharge after birth called “lochia.” This can last a few days, so try giving your pooch a dog diaper to help keep them clean and comfortable. 

How Do You Care for a Pregnant Dog?

It’s essential that expecting dogs get proper care throughout their pregnancy! Help them maintain a well-balanced nutritious diet along with light daily exercise. As your pup’s belly grows, they might have difficulty jumping on the couch or walking upstairs, so keep their bed in an easily accessible location. You can also treat your furry friend to a gentle massage using a grooming mitt during their next brushing session. They’ll likely appreciate you scratching those hard-to-reach spots!
