History

The Ragdoll has an interesting history that can be traced back to a few fluffy felines! According to Ragtastic Cattery, it all began when California breeder Ann Baker used her neighbor's backyard strays to develop her very own breed in the 1960s.  

The process started with two cats: an all-white Turkish Angora type named Josephine, who was bred with a darker Persian-looking cat. Although both cats had stunning features, Ann was specifically interested in breeding Josephine because of her extremely calm temperament—a key trait for this new breed. After another generation of selective breeding from the offspring, the Ragdoll cat was formed!  

Temperament and Purrrsonality

It’s no secret this feline loves to cuddle. In fact, the reason they are named “Ragdolls” is because they notoriously go limp when you pick them up! Although docile, Ragdoll cats are still very friendly kitties and require lots of attention to stay happy. 

Energy Level

Ragdolls have long been compared to puppies because they love spending quality time with their pet parents! Many will even say this kitty has the perfect balance of relaxation and playfulness.  

While they have the energy for games, you likely won’t see them running around as much as a dog, though. In fact, they might prefer you just carry them around the house all day. As they get older, you’ll need to give your Ragdoll a little extra motivation—like more playtime—to get their daily exercise. 

Training

Because of their intelligence and calm temperament, the Ragdoll cat breed is easy to train! They love treats and can be easily motivated with food or even just a clicker. Ragdolls also form strong bonds with their pet parents, so they are more likely to respond to their name if you use it throughout training sessions.  

Grooming and Coat Care

Grooming your Ragdoll is simpler than you might expect! Although they are a long-haired cat breed, Ragdolls are less prone to matting than other breeds with as much fur. Plus, this kitty is often easy to handle, so fussy tasks like trimming your cat’s nails should be a breeze for both of you.
