9 Cats That Don’t Shed (…Much)

Our feline friends bring us so much joy...and often leave behind a lot of fur to clean up. While the search for a hypoallergenic cat is nearly impossible (because all cats shed), there are some breeds that will leave less fur scattered around the house. Check out our list of adorable cats that don’t shed much!

#1: British Shorthair

If those big eyes don’t win you over, the British Shorthair’s fluffy coat—which hardly sheds—certainly will! You can find this cute kitty in a range of patterns and colors including orange, blue, cream, and chocolate. The British Shorthair’s dense coat only requires a quick brushing once a week with a grooming mitt for cats to help remove loose hairs and maintain that plush look.

#2: Bengal

bengal cat

The Bengal is not only one of the most recognizable cats, but also one of the largest cat breeds! While their famous cheetah-patterned coat is certainly nice on the eyes, it is also great for those who don’t like a lot of fur around the house. This short coat sheds lightly, so Bengals require just minimal brushing to stay sleek.

#3: Devon Rex

You might think this curious kitty comes from another planet with their big, pointy ears and egg-shaped head! Although the Devon Rex is simply a short-haired breed from England, they do have a personality so big it may be out of this world. The Devon Rex is highly active and may want to goof around with you all day long. This, along with a coat that rarely sheds, makes them the perfect family-friendly feline.

#4: Cornish Rex

Did you know the Cornish Rex is considered one of the smallest cat breeds? Even with a long slender frame, this kitty typically stays under nine pounds in adulthood! Like the Devon Rex, the Cornish Rex has a short coat ideal for pet parents seeking cat breeds that don’t shed much. If you look closely, this sweet kitty is also one of the few types of cats with wavy, textured hair!

#5: Bombay

bombay cat

There’s nothing spooky about this kitty! The Bombay breed was originally developed to resemble miniature panthers, which is why their bodies are stocky and their fur is glossy. Although the Bombay’s short coat sheds less than the average kitty, allergy sufferers can still have a reaction to this feline’s skin and dander.

This unique breed is famously known for being a cat who acts like a dog; in fact, you can even train the Burmese to participate in a game of fetch or tag! After lots of play, this kitty loves to snuggle—and how can you resist cozying up to this short, silky coat that won’t totally shed all over you?!

#7: Siamese

siamese cat

This feline talks the talk...almost literally! The Siamese love to interact with people by using their vocals. In addition to their friendly demeanor, the Siamese have striking blue eyes and an undeniably iconic coat. An excellent breed for those searching for cats that don’t shed, these kitties only require minimal brushing. Add a monthly bath with shampoo to their grooming routine to help keep this coat clean and looking fresh!

#8: Russian Blue

Despite its name, this friendly feline won't make you feel blue! The Russian Blue is regarded as both an intelligent and affectionate cat, and their soft coat shines a beautiful grayish-blue tint. The Russian Blue is even frequently regarded as a hypoallergenic cat breed because of their low shedding. While no cat is non-allergenic, it is possible for some cat allergy sufferers to live comfortably with this furry friend.

#9: Sphynx

Don't think we forgot about our hairless feline friends! The Sphynx is one of several hairless cat breeds that don’t shed loads of fur. Despite the nickname, hairless cats do have some hair! Their fur is typically very fine and similar to “peach fuzz,” which gives them a very soft and suede-like feel. The Sphynx still require baths and weather protection to keep their delicate skin healthy.
